“Every time we can introduce our students to promising career opportunities, and we can demonstrate how their current classroom studies apply to those opportunities, then we are opening doors and building hope,” Dr. Barthelemy said.

Christie Landry, director of BayouSTEM, said the day’s activities were made available to all students in Grades 5-8 in the parish, including students at Belle Rose Middle School, Labadieville Middle School, Napoleonville Middle School, Pierre Part Elementary, and St. Elizabeth School. The day-long event was held at the Assumption Parish Community Center in Napoleonville.Middle schoolers from across Assumption Parish engaged in hands-on STEM activities ranging from robotics to engineering and physics to aeronautics at the inaugural STEM Challenge Day on May 16.

The event was hosted by the Assumption Parish Public School System, in partnership with BayouSTEM, a regional educational institute that supports the instruction and learning of science, technology, engineering and math concepts in the greater bayou region.

“The STEM Challenge Day is a day that many of these students will fondly remember as the day they were inspired to pursue an exciting and rewarding career in science, technology, engineering or math,” Superintendent Dr. John Barthelemy said.

Pierre Part Students Earn 2nd Place in Louisiana’s Science and Engineering Fair

Pierre Part Elementary students Mia Landry and Kennedie Crochet recently won 2nd place in the Junior Division of the Louisiana State Science and Engineering Fair for their entry in the Biomedical and Health Science category.

Assumption Parish School System students Mia Landry and Kennedie Crochet recently earned a 2nd Place Award in the Junior Division of the Louisiana State Science and Engineering Fair for their entry in the Biomedical and Health Science category.

Landry and Crochet, who attend Pierre Part Elementary, presented an informational display titled “What’s Really In Your Water?” The display focused on the varying pH levels in bottled waters.  The presentation noted that pH is the measurement of electrically charged particles in a substance, which indicates how acidic or alkaline the substance is.

“We are very proud of our students for investing the knowledge they have gained in this project. Congratulations to them and to their teachers who worked with them to get them this far,” said Superintendent Dr. John Barthelemy.

The state fair was held in April at the LSU Student Union, where students from across the state competed in various categories. The event was supported by CLECO.
