Employees Begin Year with Special Visit from State Superintendent

State Superintendent Dr. Cade Brumley speaks to the Assumption Parish School System employees during a special “back-to-school” kick-off celebration.

Assumption Parish School System employees gathered at the Assumption Parish Civic Center for a “back-to-school” kick-off celebration before the state of school, where they heard of encouragement and guidance from local school leaders, including a special visit from the state’s top education leader.

Louisiana School Superintendent Dr. Cade Brumley addressed the crowd of teachers, school administrators and staff who were dressed in navy blue t-shirts with the year’s back-to-school theme of “Igniting Excellence.” The event included presentations on various guidelines and requirements, entertainment by local students, and refreshments and giveaways provided by local businesses.

“I am so honored to be back with you, and to celebrate with you the start of a great school year. I want to commend you on the job you are doing,” Brumley said.

Brumley told the crowd he had visited some of the district’s schools last school year and was pleased to see familiar faces and reconnect with local educators. He also said he made a point to check the state’s most recent accountability scores to see the reports on those schools he visited.

“I am so proud of the tremendous growth and gains that have been made here. Congratulations to you and your team for your success,” he said.

Greater Safety Measures Implemented

Safety is a priority in Assumption Parish Schools. Over the summer, the district has invested in several new security measures – new metal detectors, ZeroEyes weapon detection system, the Rave App and a partnership with Crime Stoppers.

Superintendent Dr. John Barthelemy said almost every campus in the parish will operate with single-point entryways. For example, at Assumption High School, the main entryway locks after the bell rings and only a side door will allow parents, visitors and students to enter the campus during the school day.

State Funding for the District Reduced by 25% Over Past 10 Years

A recent review of the state’s dedicated funding to Assumption Parish Schools, through the state’s Minimum Foundation Program (MFP) shows a decade-long starvation of money to the system, projected to be a reduction of more than 25% of state resources by the coming school year.

For the 2017-2018 school year, Assumption Parish Schools received $22.038 million in total MFP funding. By the 2025-2026 school year, that baseline had eroded to $17.304 million, and now with Governor Jeff Landry’s cuts to the MFP to pay for mandatory pay raises for teachers, the MFP funding for the 2026-2027 school year is projected to be $16.511 million.

“We have spent a decade optimizing, tightening our belts, and attempting to do more with less. We have reached the breaking point where there is simply no more fat left to trim; any further revenue reductions slice directly into the muscle and bone of our active instructional and non-instructional programs,” Superintendent Dr. John Barthelemy said.

The district continues to encourage parents to enroll their children in early learning programs. Research shows that children who learn to read in early pre-Kindergarten and early elementary years are more likely to achieve academic success. In fact, it is the strongest indicator of a child’s ability to achieve success.
