Assumption Parish Schools Rated #5 in Literacy Growth

Assumption Parish School Board President Honore Lewis and Superintendent Dr. John Barthelemy receive a Louisiana Literacy Leader banner from state education leaders for the district’s outstanding growth performance on the DIBELS assessment.

The Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE) recently recognized Assumption Parish Schools for outstanding results on the DIBELS assessment that rated the district No. 5 overall in growth in early literacy.

DIBELS measures early literacy skills in students from kindergarten through 8th grade, focusing on key areas such as phonemic awareness, alphabetic principle, fluency, and comprehension.

“Your district’s commitment to early literacy and the effective use of high-quality instructional materials and evidence-based practices has made a measurable impact on student achievement. The progress reflected in your DIBELS outcomes is a testament to the hard work and leadership of your entire team from school and district leaders to teachers and support staff,” said the Louisiana Department of Education’s Executive Director of Literacy Shanna Beber.

Superintendent Dr. John Barthelemy said the district’s literacy initiatives include training all teachers in the science of reading, providing individual academic support plans, implementing high-quality instructional material and tiered support, and administering literacy screening three times per year with parent reporting.

Assumption Schools’ high rating in literacy growth comes on top of the state’s report that the district ranks #3 overall among K-8 students and high schoolers for the growth in the percentage of students scoring Mastery and Advanced on the state’s 2025 LEAP.

Staff for 7th-12th Graders Enjoy Team Building Project

Twenty-four bicycles were built by Assumption High School staff members in a recent team-building activity.

The staff for the district’s newly combined middle and high school campus met together before the new school year to participate in a team-building activity.

They worked together to construct 24 new bicycles that in turn were given to students who could not afford to purchase their own.

Staff participated in a collaborative team building challenge designed to strengthen communication, trust, and problem-solving skills. Working in mixed grade-level groups, participants completed interactive tasks that require creativity, strategic thinking, and cooperation. The activity promotes stronger professional relationships and united staff across grades 7–12.

Students Reminded of Dress Code

Middle school and high school students on the Assumption High School campus are reminded they must follow the 2025-2026 dress code.

7th and 8th grade students have red school uniform shirts ONLY, and 9th through 12th grade students have black, white, navy and red uniform shirts.

School uniform shirts must be worn Tuesdays-Thursdays.  Students can opt for a PDIS shirt or uniform shirt on Mondays, and an AHS Spirit shirt of uniform shirt on Fridays.  Approved school uniform bottoms must be worn every day; these include khaki pants, shorts, skirts or skorts. No headwear is allowed (no caps, bonnets or do-rags), and no hoodies are permitted -- crew neck sweatshirts only.
