CALENDAR
August 4-6 -- Professional Development Days for Teachers
August 7 -- First Day of Classes for Students
The Louisiana Department of Education (LDOE) recently launched “The Power of Presence,” a new strategy to help schools and systems address chronic absenteeism and improve student outcomes across the state. That’s because reports show nearly 1 in 4 Louisiana students were classified as chronically absent during the 2023-2024 school year – and that number is up from the previous report, making Louisiana one of only five states out of 36 that released data to show a growing absenteeism problem.
Assumption Parish School System wants all students to attend school to maximize their learning potential. Parents are encouraged to enroll their children in school as soon as possible and maintain a consistent routine to have them attend classes every day. For more information on how the district can help, call 985-369-7251.
Seamless Summer Feeding Program
The Assumption Parish School System participated this past month in the Louisiana Department of Education’s Seamless Summer Food Program, which allowed on a first-come, first-serve basis, all children Grades 3-12 to receive free meals.
Meals were provided Monday through Thursday at Assumption High School, Napoleonville Middle School, and Napoleonville Primary School, and they had to be eaten on the school campus. Meals were not allowed to be taken off site.
“We are pleased to have been able to participate in this much-needed food program for our community. At Assumption Parish Schools, we want to be a part of those efforts that benefit our students and enrich our community,” Superintendent Dr. John Barthelemy said.
Barthelemy encouraged families who are seeking help with providing food for their children, to contact the district for information on other programs that are available throughout the year.

Several young children and their parents enjoyed a short train ride through the parking lot of the Assumption Parish Community Center. The free ride was just one of several fun activities at the Assumption Parish School’s Early Childhood Day.
Six-Year-Old Jameer Georgetown and 4-Year-Old Nala Georgetown pet a friendly goat in the petting zoo exhibit at the Assumption Parish School’s Early Childhood Day. The petting zoo was provided by Cajun Cuties Mobile Petting Zoo & Pony Rides.
Free Early Childhood Day Provides Fun and Family Resources
The Assumption Parish School System’s Ready Start Network recently hosted a free half-day of fun activities for all Assumption Parish families with children five (5) years of age and younger on June 17 at the Assumption Parish Community Center.
Activities included balloon twisting, face painting, bounce houses, pony rides and more. The event also featured a community resource fair for families.
“Our Early Childhood Day has become a very popular community event for young families who are looking for learning activities they can participate in with their young children. All the activities are free, and parents can take home learning games and books that they can share with their child throughout the summer,” said Assumption Parish Schools Preschool Coordinator and Curriculum Supervisor Rachel Dugas.
Parents Encouraged to Enroll Young Children in Early Learning Programs
Assumption Parish Schools is encouraging parents of children five (5) years of age and younger to register their child for daycare, Head Start or Pre-School for the 2025-2026 school year.
The age requirements for the parish’s early programs are as follows:
• Head Start students must be three (3) before Sept. 30, 2025
• Pre-Kindergarten students must be four (4) before Sept. 30, 2025
• Les Petits Amis Early Learning Center accepts students 6 weeks to 48 months old
• Cribs to Crayons Early Learning Center accepts students 6 weeks to 48 months old
“We want our families to take full advantage of the early learning opportunities we have in our parish. The earlier a child can begin learning, the better prepared that child will be for a successful school experience,” said Assumption Parish Schools Preschool Coordinator and Curriculum Supervisor Rachel Dugas.
Parents can register their child for any of the programs at the Head Start Office, located at 4891 Highway 308 in Napoleonville, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Parents wishing to register their child should bring the following documents with them: the child’s original birth certificate, the child’s original social security card, the child’s original immunization record, proof of residence (i.e., current water bill, electricity bill), proof of income (i.e., last two check stubs, 2024 tax documents, SNAP details), and court custody papers, if applicable.
