Transition Meetings Completed

School leaders held a meeting on May 21 in the Assumption Parish School Board Room to discuss the final preparations for the district’s transition to its new structure for next school year.

Earlier this year, the school board voted to institute its master plan that calls for a restructuring of the district’s campus configurations to reduce operation costs and allow more funding to go towards teacher pay and student support services.

The new configuration will include five PK-6 elementary schools to feed into a 7-12 combination school at the Assumption High School campus. The 7th and 8th graders will be housed in a separate building from the 9th-12th graders.

“Our plan includes much input from our community members,” Superintendent Dr. John Barthelemy said, noting that the district held numerous open house meetings across the district prior to the school board’s approval of the plan, as well as three community transition meetings since that time.

“This restructuring is about being better stewards of our resources, so we can give our students access to a broader range of programs, including advanced academics, athletics, and extracurricular activities that enhance their overall educational experience,” Dr. Barthelemy said.

Assumption High Seniors Commit to Educational Career Pathways

Four Assumption High School seniors announced their commitment to pursue educational career pathways during a special recognition ceremony on May 6 that was sponsored by the school’s Educators Rising program.

Seniors Jackson Benoit, Cecelia Murin, Ty’Lan Telfair and Sadie Vaughn signed pledges and adorned the education field’s graduation chord as part of the ceremony. They also announced their college choices. Benoit, Murin and Telfair will be attending Nicholls State University, while Vaughn has opted to attend Southeastern Louisiana University.

The high school created the Educators Rising program last year to encourage more students to go into the field of education and return to Assumption Parish to positively impact their home communities.

The program is part of the district’s “Grow Our Own” initiative, to eliminate teacher and professional staff shortages, as well as to inspire and grow current and rising educators to become community leaders and advocates for high quality education.

Middle School Students Prepare for Transition to AHS Campus

Students scheduled to be in 7th and 8th grades next school year have participated in orientation at the high school campus, and they will continue to receive updates over the summer months and final plans are made concerning the class and extracurricular offerings.

Students can expect sport tryouts to be announced soon, and the district is in the process of interviewing and hiring coaches. The sports offerings will be the same as currently offered, including football, volleyball, boys and girls basketball, baseball, softball and track, with the possible addition of soccer in the 2026-2027 school year.
