$468,750 Awarded for School Violence Prevention Proposal

The U.S. Department of Justice recently announced that Assumption Parish Public Schools has been awarded a $468,750 grant from the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) for its school violence prevention proposal.

The COPS Office School Violence Prevention Program is a competitive award program designed to provide funding to improve security at schools and on school grounds in the grantee’s jurisdiction through evidence-based school safety programs.

Applications were evaluated on several factors, including the program impact of the proposed project, financial need, need for improved security, current school safety and planning efforts, funding request and integration information, management and implementation plan, and sustainability plan.

“The project you will implement with these award funds contributes to the mission of the COPS Office and the greater goal of reducing crime and building trust between law enforcement and communities served. The team at the COPS Office looks forward to supporting you as you implement this important work,” stated the letter from Robert E. Chapman, acting director of the COPS Office.

The U.S. Department of Justice received 405 applications for the grants. It awarded 235 grants nationwide for preventing school violence, totaling nearly $72 million. Assumption Parish Schools was among five school districts in Louisiana that received the award.
