Mr. John A. Barthelemy Named Superintendent of Assumption Parish Schools
Tonight the Assumption Parish School Board selected Mr. John A. Barthelemy as our new Superintendent.
Mr. Barthelemy has had numerous positions within the field of education in his 21-year career. He has held positions in the field of education as a school bus driver, coach, teacher, disciplinarian, principal, supervisor of shipping and receiving (rebuilding school system after Hurricane Katrina), and supervisor of curriculum and instruction. Mr. Barthelemy started his career as a middle school science teacher in 1999. Currently, he holds the position of Supervisor of Secondary Schools and Academies in the Iberville Parish School System.
Mr. Barthelemy has a level 3 teaching and leadership certificate. He obtained his undergraduate Bachelor of Science degree from Southern University in Education and earned a Master’s degree from the University of New Orleans in Educational Leadership. In 2014, Mr. Barthelemy added his plus 30 endorsement from Grand Canyon University in the area of Organizational Leadership. Currently, Mr. Barthelemy is pursuing his doctorate in Public Policy with a research interest in Tier 1 curriculum implementation.
Mr. Barthelemy continues to have a growth mindset. As an instructional leader, he attended and completed the Louisiana Superintendent’s Academy Program. While attending the Superintendent’s Academy Program, he became experienced in strategic planning, community involvement, board relations, systemic change, sustainable solutions, organizational leadership, educational policy, and Superintendent’s leadership. Additionally, Mr. Barthelemy is a school leadership fellow of the school leadership center, a leadership program for school building administrators.
As an instructional leader, Mr. Barthelemy worked as a turnaround principal at South Plaquemines High School. He recruited a team of teachers and administrators to help transform South Plaquemines High School from a “D” to an “A” school. This was not an easy task because South Plaquemines High School was a combination of three vastly different communities and four schools (Buras Middle School, Buras High School, Boothville-Venice High School, and Port Sulphur High School). As a result of his efforts, Mr. Barthelemy was named Plaquemines Parish School District’s Principal of the Year. As the Supervisor of Curriculum and Instruction, Mr. Barthelemy supervises six principals, two instructional coaches, and one district athletic director and is responsible for district-wide curriculum implementation. Additionally, he oversees the district’s credit recovery program, IPSB’s Strong Start Secondary Summer Program, and Summer LEAP2025 Remediation Program.
Mr. Barthelemy serves as the vice-president of the Gamma Rho Foundation. Also, he served as the chairman of Relay for Life program, voter registration, and achievement week coordinator. He is an advocate for uplifting the community. He believes in living a purposeful life. As a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church, where he served as an altar boy, Mr. Barthelemy was taught strong Christian values. Additionally, Mr. Barthelemy served the community as a little league baseball coach.
Mr. Barthelemy is married to an outstanding educator, has two wonderful children, and dedicates his spare time to his 90-year-old grandmother and community members. He is the son of John and Emelda Barthelemy, who are retired educators of 29 and 42 years. Mr. Barthelemy is the grandson of two United States of America World War II veterans, who taught him discipline, dedication, and respect.
