All Schools Will Remain Open for 2020-2021 School Year

Assumption Parish Public Schools announced on Friday that all schools would remain open for the 2020-2021 school year.  Continuing trends of declining school enrollment had previously put the current model in question.  “Because we predicted the continuing reduction in enrollment, and were able to balance the budget, the school board feels that we can continue to offer viable programs at every school site,” said Superintendent Jeremy Couvillion.

The school system endured several years of declining student enrollment and ending with a budget deficit; however, things appear to be turning around.  A reduction in force in 2018, as well as careful spending and an increase in sales and property tax revenues, will most likely result in a budget surplus for the fiscal year.  “We will continue to keep all schools open as long as the board feels that we can continue to offer quality education and maintain a balanced budget,” said Couvillion.

“We hope to see student achievement improve at our schools and for student enrollment to increase over the next few years,” continued the Superintendent, “we have great teachers and school leaders and are excited for the future of Assumption Parish Schools.”
