School Breakfast Program
The Assumption Parish Child Nutrition Program participates in the School Breakfast Program. Any child at any school may purchase a meal through the School Breakfast Program. All Primary and Middle Schools participate in CEP and receive free meals. High School students may be eligible for free or reduced‐price meals.
The School Breakfast Program operates in the same manner as the National School Lunch Program. Nutrition standards for school breakfasts are designed to provide ¼ of the child’s Recommended Dietary Allowance and meet the recommendations of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Research has linked breakfast to academic learning. Research has shown the following:
Starting a school day with a nutritious breakfast helps students stay alert and perform better in school
Missing breakfast and experiencing hunger can impair children’s ability to learn
Eating breakfast at school helps children perform better
School breakfast improves student behavior and learning environment
Breakfast can improve children’s diets
Breakfast may reduce obesity risk
