Outstanding Alumna Makes History

Amanda Gianelloni recently became one of the first to be drafted in the inaugural Women’s Professional Baseball League (WPBL), and the first to sign with her team in San Francisco. She was the only player from Louisiana in the draft and was joined by internationally known women athletes in the top 30 list. The new league includes four teams in San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York and Boston that will play a seven-week season at the central location of Springfield, Illinois, in 2026.

The WPBL is the first pro league for women since the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League — immortalized in the film “A League of Their Own” — dissolved in 1954.

Gianelloni grew up in Assumption Parish, attended Assumption High School and earned a scholarship to play softball at Nicholls State University. During her time at Nicholls State, she broke numerous records and was selected to the USA Baseball Women’s National Team.

She earned a Bachelor of Science in Marketing in 2018 and a Master of Business Administration in 2021 from Nicholls. She was inducted into the 2024 class of the Nicholls Athletics Hall of Fame. She also owns a marketing agency, The Growth Lab, in New Orleans and is preparing to launch a new company focused on elevating female athletes.

District Announces Winners of Principal & Teacher of the Year Awards

Assumption Parish school leaders recently announced the winners of this year’s Teacher and Principal of the Year awards, which recognize the professionalism and dedication of the district’s educators in advancing student learning on their campuses.

Labadieville Elementary Principal Melanie Bellamy was named the 2025-2026 Assumption Parish Principal of the Year winner.

The district’s Teacher of the Year winners include High School Teacher of the Year Olivia Neal, Assumption High School; Middle School Teacher of the Year Brittney LeBlanc, 7th & 8th Grade Academy; Elementary Teacher of the Year Taylor Gauthreaux, Bayou L’Ourse Elementary; and Early Childhood Teacher of the Year Cherise Boudreaux, Labadieville Elementary.

Superintendent Dr. John Barthelemy and central office staff members made surprise visits to the winners’ campuses this month to present them with the news of them winning their respective awards.

Superintendent Dr. John Barthelemy and members of the Assumption Parish School Board at the December meeting recognized those support staff members who had perfect attendance at work for the first nine weeks of the school year.

“The attendance of staff members is crucial for the overall success of our school system,” Dr. Barthelemy said. “It directly impacts our ability to engage students, provide necessary support, and create a positive learning environment.”

Those transportation staff members recognized for perfect attendance included Shoni Hebert, Ron Animashaun, Ashley Rainey, Thanisha Jupiter, Donald Andrews, Tiffany Rohilliard, Denise Jones, Ronald Whittington, James Simmons, Amy Gray, Renneter Tucker, Tia Jones, Barbara Williams, Carroll Gros and Kathryn Wegiel.

Assumption Parish Students Win Art Awards

Pictured from left to right are Superintendent Dr. John Barthelemy, 5th Grader Lilah Dupre, 8th Grader Molly Simoneaux, 12th Grader Hailey Comeaux, and School Board President Bambi Hood.

Three Assumption Parish students placed in this year’s 2025 Inclusive Art Contest, sponsored by the Louisiana Governor’s Office of Disability Affairs (GODA).

Those student winners include Lilah Dupre, a 5th grader at Pierre Part Elementary, who received 2nd place; Molly Simoneaux, an 8th grader at the 7th and 8th Grade Academy, who won 3rd place; and Hailey Comeaux, a senior at Assumption High School, who won 3rd place.

In recognition of the 35th anniversary of the American with Disabilities Act (ADA), the students were invited to submit artwork that reflects the spirit of the ADA—highlighting equal rights, accessibility, and the belief that individuals with disabilities deserve the same opportunities as everyone else.

Their creative pieces showcased the power of inclusion and the value of making sure all people have what they need to succeed.
