Labadieville Primary School students learn proper hall conduct on the first day of school.

The beginning days of each school year are filled with exercises and programs that teach students the expectations, rules and procedures for behavior on our campuses.  These teaching opportunities are essential to promoting our culture of Assumption of All across our district.  A huge thank you to all who take time to do the small things that make a big difference.

New Principal Hired for Belle Rose Primary

Nellie W. Brown, newly hired principal for Belle Rose Primary School.

Nellie W. Brown, an educator experienced in leadership and mental health counseling, has been named the new principal of Belle Rose Primary in Assumption Parish Public Schools.

“We are pleased to announce the hire of Mrs. Brown.  She comes to us with more than 20 years of experience in educational leadership and a tremendous desire to positively grow our students,” said Superintendent Dr. John Barthelemy.

She comes to the district from Terrebonne Parish Schools, where she served as a master teacher, instructional coach, campus administrator, and enrichment leader. She also has 12 years of classroom teaching experience in the Terrebonne Parish and East Baton Rouge Parish public school systems.

Brown holds a bachelor’s degree in education from Southern University. She also earned a master’s degree in mental health counseling from Southern University and a master’s degree in educational leadership from Nicholls State University.

Brown assumed her new post on Aug. 12, a few days after the new school year had begun.

Assumption Parish Schools Committed to Ending Truancy

As part of the district’s strategic plan to improve the academic and overall improvement of Assumption Parish Public Schools, efforts to reduce and eliminate truancy are being implemented this school year.

"We know that absenteeism is a hinderance to academic success," Superintendent Dr. John Barthelemy said. “Research shows that students who skip more than 10 days of school are significantly less likely to get a high school diploma. In fact, by 9th grade, attendance is a better predictor of graduation rates than 8th grade test scores.”

Barthelemy encouraged parents to monitor their child’s attendance through various resources, such as Student Progress Center on the district website, report cards, and contacting the child’s school.  Furthermore, he said parents should regularly communicate with their child’s school and prohibit their child from staying home unless they are truly sick.

The district policy is that after three unexcused absences, parents will be required to report for a mandatory meeting with an School Resource Officer at the child’s school; after five or more unexcused absences, parents will report to the Assumption Parish Juvenile Court and risk arrest.

Dr. Barthelemy added that students who are regularly checked in late or being checked our early without a valid excuse will be called in to meet with the school principal and/or Child Services Director if the situation continues.
