Labadieville Elementary Principal Named State Semi-Finalist

Melanie Bellamy, Labadieville Elementary, Principal of the Year State Semifinalist

Melanie Bellamy, principal of Labadieville Elementary School, has been named a state semifinalist for the Louisiana Principal of the Year award.

Each year, the Louisiana Department of Education, in partnership with Dream Teachers and the Louisiana Association of Principals, recognizes Louisiana’s most exceptional teachers and principals through the Teacher and Principal of the Year programs. These programs celebrate educators who make extraordinary gains with students and serve as models of excellence in their communities.

The finalist for the top principal award will be announced in May, and overall winners in all categories will be awarded in July at the 20th Annual Cecil J. Picard Educator Excellence Gala.

Voters Consider Permanent Pay Raises for Teachers and Support Staff on May 16 Ballot

Louisiana voters will vote on five Constitutional Amendments on the May 16 ballot, with early voting available May 2-9.

Amendment 3 seeks to redirect certain dedicated funds to permanently increase teacher and support staff pay by paying off teacher retirement debt incurred by local school districts. Amendment 3 would allow the Education Excellence Fund, the Education Quality Trust Fund, and the Quality Education Support Fund, to be deployed to the Teachers’ Retirement System of Louisiana (TRSL).

The goal is straightforward: pay down the system’s retirement debt, which in turn reduces the costs that local school systems must pay into it each year. By lowering required retirement contributions, school systems would free up significant recurring dollars. Under the broader legislative framework tied to the amendment, those savings must be used to provide permanent salary increases for teachers and other school personnel.

State fiscal analysts have determined that the savings could fund a permanent salary increase of $2,250 per year for teachers and $1,125 per year for support staff.

The state’s two largest unions for public school teachers – Louisiana Federation of Teachers and the Louisiana Association of Educators – have endorsed Constitutional Amendment 3.

Early Childhood Day Set for June 23

The Assumption Ready Start Network is once again hosting its Early Childhood Day for the greater community.  Parents are invited to bring their young children, aged 5 years and younger, to the Assumption Parish Community Center on June 23 from 9 a.m. to noon to enjoy games and learning activities, to win prizes and receive giveaways, and to receive important parenting resources.

During the event, parents can also register their child for one of the district’s early childhood programs, including pre-kindergarten (for 4-year-olds), Head Start (for 3-year-olds), and Daycare (for children 6 weeks to 48 months). Parents can also register their children for any of the programs at the Head Start Office, located at 4891 Highway 308 in Napoleonville, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
