These dads were among 59 who participated in the “Day with Dads” events and helped to make it a great success.
The district’s Head Start Program recently hosted a Day with Dads that included a variety of experiences, such as flying kites, reading books, engaging in outdoor activities, and having lunch with their children.
Fifty-nine dads participated in the event. School board members Jesse Robertson and Honoray Lewis also attended the event. Food for the event was provided by St. Paul Baptist Church, Bright Morning Star Baptist Church, Rose Hill Baptist Church and Thee Prevailing Church.
“Fatherhood engagement is a vital and integral aspect of parent, family and community engagement work,” said Family & Community Specialist Kennitra Johnson, who organized the event. “Male family members and father figures serve key roles in the healthy development of their children and families, and they have much to add to Head Start communities.”
Napoleonville Middle School Principal Named State Semifinalist
Napoleonville Middle School Principal Katherine Aucoin is a semifinalist for the state’s top principal of the year.
Katherine Aucoin, principal of Napoleonville Middle School, has been named a semifinalist for the state’s top principal of the year.
Mrs. Aucoin is one of 24 principals from across the state, and one of only eight middle school principals, who will be honored at the 16th Annual Excellent Educators Awards Gala in New Orleans on July 30, 2022. The event is co-sponsored by the Louisiana Department of Education and Dream Teachers, a nonprofit organization dedicated to recognizing and reward exceptional educators in Louisiana.
The state will recognize the top principals at the three school levels – elementary, middle school and high school; as well as an overall top winner.
“To be recognized among the state’s top principals is quite an honor for Mrs. Aucoin and her school. The recognition speaks to her vision for the school, her ability to lead her team in that vision, and her ability to positively impact learning in the classroom,” Assumption Parish School Superintendent John Barthelemy said.
Assumption Parish Head Start Preparing Youngest Students
The Assumption Parish Head Start program is preparing the district’s youngest students to be ready for kindergarten success by hiring highly qualified personnel, immersing children in a research-based curriculum, following federal and state mandates, attending to the social-emotional needs of our children, and analyzing data to make informed decisions to meet the individualized needs of our children.
More than 100 children are enrolled in this year’s program, with over 90 percent of them having received medical and dental screenings. At the same time, parents are being offered opportunities to attend workshops, serve on committees and network with local agencies to meet their families’ needs concerning education, health, social-emotional and safety issues.

Virtual Workshop to Enhance Families as Education Partners
Assumption Parish Schools’ Early Childhood Department is offering a virtual workshop on May 11 to better engage families in their children’s education. The free session will focus on how parents and extended family can help their children prepare for school readiness.
Two virtual sessions will be held – one from 9 a.m. to 10:30 am, and a second session from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. A link to the sessions can be accessed on the district website, at http://assumptionschools.com/news/2022/3/16/assumption-parish-early-childhood-workshop-series.
“It’s important that every child begin school with the skill set and emotional confidence needed to be successful,” said Rachel Dugas, Early Childhood Coordinator. “This workshop is a great way for parents, grandparents and involved family members to learn more about making a child’s transition to a daily classroom setting a positive one. We have many resources to help students make this ‘next step’ in their lives.”
