Students at Labadieville Middle School recently did a presentation on Historically Black Colleges and Universities as part of the school’s recognition of Black History Month.

As part of this year’s Black History Month program at Labadieville Middle School, students learned about some of the nation’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities.  Each homeroom class created a poster highlighting a specific HBCU and students from that class presented the poster during the school’s program.

Superintendent John Barthelemy served as the program’s guest speaker. LMS students performed and school alumni and local HBCU students and graduates submitted video presentations for the program.

Fast Forward Options Available to High School Students

Assumption High School juniors Mikayla Fobbs and Madi Southern work independently on coursework for their psychology class. Upon completion of the course, the students will have earned high school and college credit in the subject.

Students at Assumption High School have a unique opportunity to earn post-secondary credentials well before graduating high school, which is better preparing them for the career of their choice.

As part of the state’s TOPS University Pathway program, the school is partnered with Fletcher Community College to offer students online courses in a variety of subjects.  Students can take courses at the high school during their 9th and 10th grade years, then attend classes at the Fletcher Community College in Shriever during their 11th and 12th grade years to earn dual credits.  Students can earn enough credits to graduate high school with a diploma and an Associate Degree.  The students can access the Louisiana Transfer Degree Program to apply their credits toward a four-year degree.

Assumption School District Launches Teacher Recruitment Campaign

Maintaining a skilled, certified teacher workforce in the district’s classrooms at every level is a primary strategy of Assumption Parish Schools to improve the quality of its workforce and overall academic excellence.

To bolster the district’s existing corps of certified professionals, school leaders are offering a signing bonus to teachers new to the system.  The district also is promoting the fact that it offers the highest pay in the region, for teachers with 10-plus years experience, and the highest step pay index in the region.

The district is sending out its strong message through local billboards, social media and a direct mail campaign.

“We want to reach out to experienced educators and those young prospects who see education as a possible career, to let them know that Assumption Parish Schools offers a number of employment opportunities that can contribute to one’s quality of life as an educator,” said Human Resources Director Shannon Clement.

Improving One-on-One Responses

Superintendent John Barthelemy recently led a discussion with the district’s “Teacher Advisory” committee to collaborate on how teacher voices can be better heard by the administration.

Superintendent John Barthelemy recently led a discussion with the district’s “Teacher Advisory” committee, including teachers from every school in the district, on how their voices can be better heard by the administration.  The workshop included a review of district protocols and regulatory requirements, and it provided time for teachers to openly discuss day-to-day activities.

The meeting is part of the district’s strategy to improve academic performance, enhance inclusion and strengthen interpersonal skills.
