Assumption Parish Schools Improves District Score
Assumption High School Earns “A” Rating
Assumption Parish Schools continued its upward trend in student academic performance, according to the state’s most recent accountability report, which showed the district improved its performance score from 78.7 in 2022 to 80.6 for 2023. That score gives Assumption Parish Schools a strong “B” Rating in overall performance.
Seven of the district’s nine schools saw improved scores, and Assumption High School garnered an “A” Rating by earning a School Performance Score of 92.4. This year’s scores also make the second consecutive year in the past six years that no Assumption Parish school received a failing grade.
“We are pleased with the continued trend of overall improvement across the district, and we are especially proud of the outstanding achievements at the high school,” Superintendent Dr. John Barthelemy said. “While we still have many challenges across our district, and each year there are some setbacks; we know that our district is moving forward as we continue to strengthen our professional development, utilize best teaching strategies, and prioritize our spending and use of resources to advance learning.”
School Performance Scores are a measure of how well schools perform on a variety of indices, which include the Assessment Index (scores of students at each grade level), Progress Index (growth of each student year to year), Interests and Opportunities (looks at course offerings for well-roundedness), Dropout Credit Accumulation Index (dropout data and credits earned by the end of 9th grade), Strength of Diploma (credits earned and the four-year graduation rate) and ACT Index (scores from ACT and WorkKeys tests). Each index is weighted to produce a school’s overall scores.
Assumption High School increased its School Performance Score by 3.6 points, up from a score of 88.8 to 92.4. Several indicators contributed to the growth, including improvements on the school’s Strength of Diploma measurement, up from 102.2 points to 105.6 points; the Cohort Graduation Rate index, up from 112.5 points to 119 points; and the ACT index, which jumped from 59.2 points to 71.4 points. The high school’s School Performance Score of 92.4 ranks in the top one-third percent in the state.
Assumption’s Cohort Graduation Rate is the state’s 18th best. At the same time, the Strength of Diploma and ACT index for the school is ranked 27th in the state.

Other district schools that improved their School Performance Scores included Belle Rose Middle School, up from 53 point to 55.3 points; Labadieville Middle School, up from 53.1 points to 58.4 points; Napoleonville Middle School, up from 79.2 points to 79.8 points; Napoleonville Primary School, up from 63.5 points to 67.3 points; Pierre Part Elementary School, up from 79.4 points to 83 points; and Bayou L’Ourse Primary, up from 67.7 points to 73.8 points.
Three of the district’s improving schools were also named “Top Gains” honorees – Belle Rose Primary, Napoleonville Middle School, and Bayou L’Ourse Primary. The “Top Gains” designation is awarded to schools from the Louisiana Department of Education that demonstrate excellence in student progress from one year to the next. A school is designated as “Top Gains” if the progress index is 90 or higher and that school is not in Urgent Intervention Required for any reason. The state report shows Bayou L’Ourse Primary has a Progress Index of 104.1, Napoleonville Middle has a Progress Index of 100.4; and Belle Rose Primary has a Progress Index of 99.2.
Most of the district schools remained the same or grew their percentage of students scoring Mastery or Advanced on the 2023 LEAP Test. Those schools that grew their percentage of Mastery and Advanced scores were Bayou L’Ourse Primary, up 11% (from 31% to 42%); Assumption High School, up 10% (from 37% to 47%); Belle Rose Middle School, up 4% (from 10% to 14%); Pierre Part Elementary, up 3% (from 45% to 48%); Labadieville Middle, up 2% (from 19% to 21%) and Belle Rose Primary, up 1% (from 23% to 24%). Napoleonville Primary and Napoleonville Middle maintained the same percentage of students scoring Mastery and Advanced, at 32% and 41%, respectively. Labadieville Primary had a slight drop of 6% (from 22% to 28%).
The district overall saw a 3% climb in the percentage of students scoring Mastery and Advanced, improving from 33% to 36% and advancing Assumption Parish Schools into the state’s top one-third in that category.
