K-2 Teachers Put District’s Strategic Plan into Action

K-2 Teachers in Assumption Parish Schools met this month with curriculum instructors to identify classroom challenges and develop successful responses.

Teachers for some of the district’s youngest students have been actively meeting each month and working with curriculum leaders to strengthen their implementation of the Expeditionary Learning curriculum.

The goal of the strategic workshops is to deepen the educators’ understanding of the units that they teach and how to customize lessons to meet the needs of every student.  K-2 teachers gather each month to collaborate, identify challenges and develop successful responses. In addition, each teacher receives professional development through regular PLC meetings.

“The work has allowed our teachers an opportunity to see how lessons should build upon each other to enhance student success,” Superintendent John Barthelemy said. “Continuous exposure to best practices and growing understanding of our practice is just one of the ways we are putting our strategic plan into action to reach every student.”

“By developing better teachers, we are implementing our vision of Assumption for All,” he said.

District Creates Aspiring Leaders Cohort

The district’s first Aspiring Leaders Cohort meeting was held Feb. 8, and participants, pictured left to right, included: Director of Curriculum & Instruction Britney Allen, candidates Cari Leonard, Keith Menard, and Dr. Johnny Lawrence, Supervisor of Elementary Education Rachel Dugas, and Supervisor of Special Education Margaret Cage.  Superintendent John Barthelemy led the discussion at the time of the photo.

Assumption Parish Schools’ administrative leadership recently created the Aspiring Leaders Cohort to grow and prepare inspiring young educators within the district to assume greater leadership roles.

The first candidates selected for the cohort include Dr. Johnny Lawrence, Cari Leonard and Keith Menard. District leaders are hoping to add more candidates in future sessions.

“Our mission is to prepare school leaders to inspire lifelong learners, prepare students for their chosen future, and cultivate an environment conducive to learning,” said Supervisor of Special Education Margaret Cage, who was one of several central office staff who met with the candidates. Others included Director of Curriculum & Instruction Britney Allen, Supervisor of Elementary Education Rachel Dugas, and Superintendent John Barthelemy.

The cohort held its first meeting on Feb. 8, with plans to meeting monthly, focusing on field work exercises and digital reflections through this summer. The aspiring leaders will participate in a variety of activities that align to leadership standards that govern school leaders, including vision, mission and goals, teaching and learning, managing organization systems and safety, collaborating with families and stakeholders, ethics and integrity, the education system, and understanding political, social economic, legal and cultural contexts.

The expectations for the cohort include:

•             Engage in a variety of learning activities as the leader of your own school.

•             Complete activities with research, data, and current information taking ownership and the initiative to color outside of the lines.

•             Be present in leadership activities in your current position at your school to bring positive change and make a difference.

•             Be a lifelong learner engaging in professional praxis to build a body of work that is transferable to impact positive change in schools.

•             Be a change agent to inspire learners at all levels, impact school growth, and overall student achievement.

Plans Under Review for Board Redistricting

The Assumption Parish School Board and Police Jury recently held a joint redistricting committee meeting to allow their hired consultants with South Central Planning & Development Commission to present plans for newly drawn elected districts.

The meeting was held Feb. 10 at the Assumption Parish School Board Office.

Every 10 years, the United States conducts a census to count every resident in the United States.  That date is used to determine the breakdown of many politically elected positions, particularly where positions must have equal populations.  South Central Planning & Development Commission assisted Assumption Parish in developing its 2011 redistricting plan.
